Making Linux hum!
February 20th, 2006 | by Chris |I have been a Linux user for about 2 years now. I absolutely love using this operating system. What is Linux? It is a windows desktop replacement or a server. I use Mandriva - you see, Linux comes in many flavors. Red Hat, Fedora Core, Slax, Yellow Dog, Umbutu, to name a few. Unlike Microsoft Windows, you can pick and choose which version of Linux you would like. Best of all it is free to download and install and comes with more than 3000 applications, all equally free to use.
Never heard of Linux? It is one of the main operating systems running the Internet. There is more written about this system that my simple postings cannot do it justice. Check out http://www.mandriva.com and then if you choose to download it, be sure to take a look at check out this tutorial on getting Mandriva Linux 2006 up and running quite smoothly.
Below is a picture of my desktop.

I opened up several commonly used applications that I rely on:
Open Office Writer (MS Word replacement)
Xmms (Like Winamp)
Firefox (like Firefox
)
Gaim (an Instant Messenger that works with Yahoo, MSN, Google, ICQ and a few other chat systems)
You might also notice that I am downloading free updates to my system in the background.
Enough said, give it a try yourself. I will run in conjunction with Windows. I started with a dual boot system and have now replaced Windows as my main machine. Yes, you can open/change/save MS files, such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. You can use the web, email, and all the other features.
Well enough said. Give it a try for yourself. Once you try it and realize that you can do without Windows, you might just like it!
